Curriculum in SAU 50 Our curriculums are aligned with the New Hampshire State Curriculum Frameworks and based on end-of-year grade level expectations. Each district has its uniqueness, but we all share the same standards of learning. As a Follow the Child District, the curriculum provides not only for the academic needs of students, but for the personal, physical and social aspects as well, thus educating the whole child. Integrated within our curriculums are goals for technology and content area reading and writing. Our goal is to set high standards for all students and to guide them to grow and meet these expectations. Teachers in all the schools, at various grade levels, collaborate in Professional Learning Communities to determine what will be taught at each grade level in each subject area. Everyone who teaches a subject area has input into this process. So far, teams have generated lists of skills and have been making decisions as to when those skills are introduced, developed and (applied) mastered. The goal is that all areas of the curriculum will be reviewed in terms of redundancies and gaps, as well as aligned to the state standards, by June 2009. These are living documents that will be periodically revisited to make sure they stay current and accurate. As completed, curriculum documents can be accessed through the links below. The next step in our curriculum process is to determine essential skills and create curriculum-based common assessments. The focus will shift from what we teach, to the essential skills for students to learn. The team created common assessments will help us determine if students are on track, or whether we need to make some shifts in our instruction in order for students to master the skills by the end of the year. We’ll use the data as a source of conversation and as a foundation for our discussions around best practices as we continue to meet in our SAU 50 Professional Learning Communities. Questions about the curriculum documents and process may be directed to your child's classroom teacher, school administrators, or to the Instruction & Curriculum Coordinator for SAU 50, Linda Walsh.
