A notice went home at open house with information on accessing the students' blogs and their Quia account for science class quizzes. Information is below.
Dear 7th grade families,
Through a grant from the Rye Education Foundation, the 7th graders are fortunate to have a netbook available to them for all of their classes. A netbook is a small laptop that has just the basic applications on it. It got its name as a netbook because it reaches its full potential by using tools on internet and a notebook computer.
The students are responsible for their assigned netbook in each classroom. They have been labeled with their names. The students are now familiar with caring for the equipment, connecting to our server, using Open Office, saving documents to their folder on the server (called Whipperwill), sharing documents, accessing the internet and more.
Having greater accessibility with the technology, the students will be able to use a variety of tools that require traditional and/or higher level of thinking skills. You are invited to follow your child’s progress using some of these tools. We will be using 2 tools in particular:
a. Classblogmeister.com – a space for sharing pieces of work and projects
b. Quia.com - a secure web-based area to take quizzes, complete surveys and/or use review tools (Science class only at this time.)The students have codenames for these tools. They are not allowed to share their real names openly on the internet. Internet safety is obviously a major component in our classrooms. By using the tools in a controlled way and educating the students, we hope they will learn to be safe, ethical and appropriate when using the technology and the internet in and out of school.
